It has always been Rystad Energy's strategy to collect data and build complete data sets in order to provide capability for bottom-up and complete quantitative and qualitative analyses of the E&P business. Further, results of numerous analyses have been fed back to calibrate and improve existing data sets. Rystad Energy has developed a number of global databases of which some are offered to the market. The databases are referred to as cubes as they are made available as OLAP cubes.

The UCube Database
UCube is the main database. Including all oil and gas assets, reserves, production, financial figures, and ownership in past, present, and future, it is a representation of the complete E&P universe. Besides being a powerful tool for look-up and analysis of E&P information, UCube also provides an infrastructure to which other models are applied resulting in additional new cubes. The data in UCube are organized to enable analysis at different levels, along a number of dimensions. This feature is also shared by the other cubes.

The DCube Database
Unique in its kind, DCube provides a complete and integrated global database for analysis of the entire oilfield service market. At the same time, it is a market analysis, forecasting, and decision-making tool incorporating all important market drivers of the oil and gas industry. Expenditures are broken down on supplier segments to allow assessment of specific markets. These markets can be analyzed along various dimensions, including geography, operator, time, water depth, development type, field maturity, etc.

Data content - public sources assessed and adjusted
Data content is taken from all available public sources - government papers, company reports, presentations, news, and scientific papers. All data are reviewed and qualified. When assessing data, Rystad Energy may overrule public sources and provide own estimates if assumed more correct. In addition, when data are lacking Rystad Energy applies models to fill in the gaps. This applies to all forecasting but also to some historic data. These models are based on analysis of industry performance. For example, a general, basic assumption is that the industry will continue as today. Shifts in the industry represent new opportunities, and extensive analysis and modeling are used to forecast correct developments.

Cube Browser - one common interface to all cubes
Cube Browser is Rystad Energy's proprietary client software used to access all cubes. It is a tool that makes it easy to slice and dice and drill-down the data sets used for the cubes. Cube Browser is made to be the ultimate consulting software - fast, flexible, and efficient in producing reports and quick and easy to learn.

The Story Behind
During his long career as an oil and gas consultant, Jarand Rystad - founder of Rystad Energy - often found himself spending much of his project time researching upstream data to complete bottom-up analysis. One day he decided to develop a global and complete upstream database, which he felt was missing in the market. After five years of development involving hundreds of people and applying the most modern database technology available, UCube had by far exceeded what we could have dreamt of. By getting results in seconds rather than weeks, users now can engage in more rapid and in-depth strategy and analysis work involving all upstream strategy and business development.
